Atypical Rett Syndrome. Molecular analysis has allowed the broadening of the phenotype of MECP2 mutations beyond RTT to include girls who have mild mental retardation, autism, and a phenotype resembling Angelman syndrome , as well as males with severe encephalopathy. Rett syndrome (RTT) and autism disorder (AD) are 2 neurodevelopmental disorders of early life that share phenotypic features, one being hand stereotypies. Distinguishing RTT from AD often represents a challenge, and given their distinct long‐term prognoses, this issue may have far‐reaching implications. Unlike autism (which may only have a genetic predisposition, refer to the article on Is Autism Genetic), Rett’s syndrome is considered a genetic disorder though it is surprising that in most cases, it occurs in families without any prior history of autism. Rett’s is caused when a mutation randomly occurs in a gene.

With Autism, the lifespan of a child is similar to the general Both Rett’s Syndrome and autism are considered to be on the autism spectrum, due to sharing a lot of the same red flags such as developmental delays between eighteen months and three years old, sudden onset of regression out of nowhere, and the genetic component of both disorders. RETT’S SYNDROME. First identified by the Australian, Dr Andreas Rett, in 1965, Rett’s is a complex neurological degenerative disorder that affects only girls. It is rarer than some of the types on the autism spectrum, affecting 1 in every 10,000 girls. Rett Syndrome is a genetic condition seen mainly in girls. It is characterized by early normal development followed by regression.

Rett syndrome is a progressive neurodevelopmental disorder that almost exclusively affects females. Only in rare cases are males affected. Infants with Rett syndrome generally develop normally for about 7 to 18 months after birth. Rett syndrome may be misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy. A child affected with Rett syndrome normally follows a standard developmental path for the first 5 months of life.

12 Nov 2019 Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual and physical Angelman syndrome, autism spectrum disorder or cerebral palsy.

It is characterized by normal early growth and development followed by a slowing of development, loss of purposeful use of the hands, distinctive hand movements, slowed brain and head growth, problems with walking, seizures, and intellectual disability. Signs of Rett syndrome that are also present in cerebral palsy (regression of the type seen in Rett syndrome would be unusual in cerebral palsy; this confusion could rarely be made): possible short stature, sometimes with unusual body proportions because of difficulty walking or malnutrition caused It is categorized as an autism spectrum disorder, but, unlike most forms of autism, Rett syndrome has a clear-cut cause—a mutation in a protein known as MeCP2. Zhang and colleagues recently described the role of MeCP2 in forming important circuits within the brain known as inhibitory circuits. Rett syndrome is an X-linked autism-spectrum disorder caused by mutations in MECP2, encoding methyl CpG-binding protein 2.
